Why seniors often don't drink enough

Many elderly people rarely feel thirsty. Some also drink too little out of fear of going to the toilet frequently. A sufficient supply of fluids ensures that their physical and mental performance is maintained.

According to the DGE, the following guide value applies to older people aged 65 and over: Seniors should drink at least 1.3 litres of liquid per day, and of course more on hot days. Exceptions are people with illnesses, for example of the heart or kidneys, for whom the doctor recommends drinking restrictions.

What if I don't drink enough?

Thirst stimulates drinking. However, this sense cannot always be relied on: under stress or when working very concentrated, the body suppresses the sensation of thirst. Those who drink too little, however, get tired faster - and can concentrate less well. Can you lose weight by drinking water?

The reason for this: a lack of fluids draws water out of the blood and tissues. The consequences are headaches, reduced physical performance and constipation. After just a few days, severe dehydration can lead to kidney failure and circulatory failure. A person can only get by for two to four days without any fluids.

Which drinks are the healthiest?

Drink plenty of water! Give the body what it needs: Water. Water is undisputedly the healthiest drink, but herbal and fruit teas (without sugar) can also compensate for the loss of water and, like spritzers (1 part juice and 3 parts water), quench thirst.

Sugar-containing drinks, on the other hand, are unsuitable as thirst quenchers, because they contain a lot of calories along with sugar. These increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In children, the high sugar content increases the risk of tooth decay.

Pure water or tea can be easily “spiced up”, for example with a splash of lime or lemon juice, with fresh herbs, ginger or fruit. Let the mixture steep in the refrigerator for a while. The aromas of the ingredients are transferred to the water.

Coffee and black tea (without sugar) can also be added to the fluid balance. However, because of the stimulating ingredients, these drinks are more likely to be viewed as stimulants. Three to four cups a day are usually not a problem. Alkaline drink water from a free standing water cooler in Perth.

This is what happens to our body when we regularly drink warm water:

Digestion and metabolism improve

A glass of warm water on an empty stomach sends a digestive impulse to the gastrointestinal system and gets our metabolism going in the morning due to the high temperature. Sufficient fluids during the day also help the body to better break down food into its individual parts. This is all the faster if it does not have to be heated to body temperature first, but arrives warm in the stomach.
