Moisture loss

Every day your body loses fluid in 4 different ways (H2O, water):

urine (1500 ml)
stool (100 ml)
exhalation (400 ml)
sweat (500 ml)

A total of 2500 ml of moisture is lost. You lose one more fluid earlier when you:

  • intensive sports (1 to 2 liters of fluid per hour)
  • often drink alcohol (diuretic effect)
  • being outside a lot during hot days (you sweat more)
  • are sick (with diarrhea and vomiting you lose a lot of fluid)
  • diet contains a lot of salt and protein (your body needs more fluid to get rid of all that salt and the breakdown products of protein)

Sources of moisture

Your body takes in moisture in 3 ways:
  • by drinking (depending on how much you drink)
  • by eating (900 ml)
  • oxidation water (350 ml)
Oxidation water is moisture that is released during the burning of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Burning simply means: converting nutrients into new energy for your body.

To balance your body's water balance, you need more than 2.5 liters of fluid per day. The Nutrition Center advises an adult woman and man to drink 1.5 to 2 liters of fluid per day.

Fact or fable?

That you have to drink 2 liters of water a day is partly a fable and partly a fact. Your body needs 2 liters of fluid daily. You get this through food and oxidation water. But also by regularly drinking something. Drinking 2 liters of water a day is not necessary. Other drinks that help you balance the water balance include:

  • green and black tea (without milk & sugar)
  • coffee (limited due to caffeine, without milk & sugar)
  • milk

I do not recommend juices and soft drinks as a "thirst quencher". In addition to moisture, they contain a lot of sugar (carbohydrates) and are bad for the enamel on your teeth. A glass of cola (light) or orange juice once a day or every few days does not hurt.
